Después de una semana de trabajo, El equipo Burkina
2012/2013 podemos decir que está funcionando a pleno rendimiento, y por ese
motivo vamos a describir de manera breve algunas de las experiencias personales de los
voluntarios contado por ellos mismos.

Equipo de Oftalmología
En este equipo están trabajando las dras. Dori Alonso,
Begoña González y Sonia Villarón junto con el Dr. Anish Gupta, anestesista del
equipo. Tania Linares es la Instrumentista de quirófano y tienen la colaboración
de los estudiantes de Medicina, Joel, Marion y Ariadna. Se están atendiendo
diariamente 50 pacientes cada día y hasta este momento se han operado 35
cataratas.

Ophthalmology Team
In this team are working the doctors: Dori Alonso, Begoña González and Sonia Villarón along with Dr. Anish Gupta, anaesthetist's of the team. Tania Linares is the instrumentalist of the operating room and they have the collaboration of students of medicine, Joel, Marion and Ariadna. 50 patients are being attended every day and so far they have operated 35 cataract.
El hijo de una
paciente operada hace dos días ha venido hoy para darnos una carta de
agradecimiento después de haber sido operada. Nos comentó su hijo que cuando
esta mañana ha quitado el vendaje de su ojo no podía creer que hubiese
recuperado la visión de ese ojo. Esta es la carta:
Os doy las gracias a
todo el equipo de médicos y enfermeras y mi deseo es que el señor os siga dando
fuerzas para ayudar a nuestro pueblo. He
sido operada por vosotros y ahora he recobrado la vista, una vez más gracias
por todo lo que hacéis por la población con la ayuda del Señor.
DRA. Sonia Villarón:
The son of an operated woman two days ago has come today to give us a thank-you letter after having been operated. His son told us that when this morning she removed the bandage from his eye she could not believe that she had recovered the vision in that eye.

I would like to thank the entire team of doctors and nurses and my desire is that the Lord continue to give you strengths to help our people. I have been operated by you and now I have regained the view, once more thank you for everything you do for the population with the help of the Lord.
Joel Didier:
Realmente estoy muy
impresionado por el trabajo que realizan nuestras oftalmólogas, considero que
es un trabajo extremadamente preciso. Es increíble que yo pueda tener la
oportunidad de ayudar a estas personas trabajando junto a ellas todo el día, para
mí son un gran ejemplo de perseverancia.
Joel Didier:
I am really very impressed by the work of our ophthalmologists, I think that it's an extremely precise work. It is incredible that I can have the opportunity to help these people working beside them throughout the day, for me they are a great example of perseverance.
Dr. Anish Gupta:
Ayer llegó a la
clínica en bicicleta una persona para operarse de cataratas después de un
recorrido de 5 kilómetros. Al finalizar la
cirugía el estaba dispuesto a coger su bicicleta de nuevo y regresar a su casa
en la bicicleta. Yo le dije que era un
problema volver con la bicicleta a su casa después de la cirugía y el me respondió
: Ningún problema llegaré hasta donde pueda y dormiré en la calle.
Dr. Anish Gupta:
Yesterday came to the clinic a person for cataract surgery after a distance of 5 kilometres by bike. At the end of surgery the was willing to take his bike again and return to his home. I told him that it was a problem to return home with the bike after surgery and he answered me: no problem, I can sleep on the street tonight and go back home tomorrow.
Marion Laplace (odontología, Medicina General):
Una mujer de 35 años
que venía bastante arreglada, ella tenía un tumor en el hombro de unos 15
centímetros. Durante 10 años, el tumor estaba creciendo y ella no podía hacer
nada. Nos pedía que le quitásemos ese tumor, los médicos le miraron diciéndole
que no podían hacer nada por falta de medios. En el momento su rostro cambio,
bajó su cabeza y se marchó. La verdad es
que me entristecí mucho, porque hay mucha gente que viene con mucha esperanza
de ser curados de su dolencia y por desgracia
algunas veces no podemos hacer nada y se tienen que marchar con su
problema. Todo esto no me desanima, sinó que me da ánimos para volver más
preparada en próximas ocasiones y poder atender estos casos estos días no hemos
sido capaces de solucionar.
Marion Laplace (General Medicine, Dentistry):
A woman of 35 years came all dressed up, she had a tumor on his shoulder, about 15 centimeters. For 10 years, the tumor was growing and she could do nothing. She asked us to remove that tumor, the doctors looked at him telling him that they could not do anything for lack of means. At this time his face changed, she lowered his head and walked away. The truth is that it grieved me a lot, because there are many people that comes with much hope of being cured of his ailment and unfortunately sometimes we can't do anything and they have to go with their problems. All this not discouraged me, but also that gives me encouragement to return more prepared on upcoming occasions and be able to handle these cases that these days we have not been able to solve.
Dr. Joan Matas (ginecología):
Para mi se me hace muy
complicado ver patologías que en nuestra consulta en Barcelona podríamos solucionar
rápidamente y aquí no puedes hacer absolutamente nada.
En África hay dos
tipos de patologías que no podemos solucionar y que son de mucha trascendencia
para la mujer.
La primera de ellas es cuando alguien viene con un tumor inoperable. Esto
siempre te deja muy mal, porque ves que ella se va tal como ha venido, con su
problema y en estos casos, no tienen ninguna esperanza para sobrevivir. Lo único
que podemos hacer por estos personas es orar por ellas, presentar el caso a
Dios para que el haga su voluntad. En Burkina Faso no hay posibilidad de
radioterapia y lógicamente estas personas tampoco pueden permitírselo.
Otra caso frecuente
son los casos de esterilidad. Tener hijos es muy importante en todas las
culturas. Nosotros venimos a Burkina por un tiempo limitado y es imposible que
podamos dedicarnos a ello.
Una de las cosas que
siempre me ha impresionado de las gentes de Burkina es la gratitud de todas las
personas que atendemos. Por supuesto, Dios siempre me sorprende con cosas
nuevas y bonitas como fue el nacimiento de un bebé en nuestra consulta hace 3
días.
Dr. Joan Matas (Gynecology):
For my I find it very difficult to see pathologies that in our consultation in Barcelona we could solve quickly and here we can do absolutely nothing.
There are two types of pathologies that we can not solve and are of great significance to women in Africa.
The first one is when someone comes with an inoperable tumor. This always leaves you very badly, because you see that she will go as it has came, with her problem, and in these cases, they haven't any hope to survive. The only thing we can do for these people is pray for them, submit the case to God so that he do his will. In Burkina Faso, there is no possibility of radiotherapy and logically these people nor can afford it.
Another frequent case are the cases of sterility. Having children is very important in all cultures. We come to Burkina for a limited time and it is impossible that we can devote ourselves to do so.
One of the things that has always impressed me from the people of Burkina is the gratitude of everyone that we attend. Of course, God always surprise me with new and beautiful things as it was the birth of a baby in our consultation 3 days ago.
Ariadna Fernández (Ginecología y Oftalmología):
Recuerdo que durante
el parto yo estaba muy emocionada e ilusionada, puedo decir que fue una
experiencia impresionante para mi. Me gustó mucho porque pude ayudar en el
parto, a veces no puedes hacer mucho, pero Joel y yo estábamos más con la
madre, tranquilizándola y dándole nuestro apoyo. Esta mañana vi a la mujer en
una de las casas del camino, ella salió y me reconoció, es muy emocionante y
sorprendente sentir y notar su agradecimiento.
Ariadna Fernandez (Gynecology and Ophthalmology):
I remember that during labor I was very excited, I can say that it was an awesome experience for my. I liked it much because I was able to help in childbirth, sometimes you can not do much, but Joel and I were more with the mother, reassuring it and giving it our support. This morning I saw the woman in one of the houses in the way, she went out and recognized me, is very exciting and amazing to receive and feel her appreciation.
Abigail Sánchez (ORL/Audiología)
Nuestra intención para
este viaje era hacer exploraciones audiológicas a todos los niños del orfanato
de Acts Ministry ya que son niños muy pobres y normalmente tienen enfermedades
pero no están diagnosticadas. Durante los 8 años que llevamos viajando a este
país hemos notado que la incidencia de la meningitis es muy elevada en los
niños y suele dejar como secuela una Hipoacusia Neurosensorial muy aguda. De
las 100 exploraciones que hemos realizado estos días se han diagnosticado un 10%
Hipoacusias. Este porcentaje es muy elevado si lo comparamos con cualquier país
europeo. De todos estos pacientes atendidos, unos 6 van a pasar a un estudio
para adaptación de audífonos.
Hay muchas historias
para contar, pero quizá una de ellas fue el caso de una niña con una sordera
profunda. La madre nos contaba que su marido a pesar de estar divorciado no
dejaba ir a su hija al colegio porque no entendía nada. Es muy triste ver como estos
niños no tienen ninguna posibilidad ni ayuda para acceder a la escolarización.
Abigail Sanchez (ORL/Audiology)
Our
intention for this trip was to make audiological explorations to all the
children of the orphanage of Acts Ministry because they are very poor children
and they usually have illnesses but they are not diagnosed. During the 8 years
that we have been traveling to this country we have noticed that the incidence
of meningitis is very high in children and usually leave as a sequel to a very
acute Hipoacusia Neurosensorial. From the 100 Scans we've done these days, 10%
have been diagnosed as Hipoacusias. This percentage is very high if we compare
it with any European country. Of all these patients treated, about 6 will pass
to a study on adaptation of hearing aids.
There
are many stories to tell, but perhaps one of these was the case of a girl with
a profound hearing loss. The mother told us that her husband despite being
divorced wouldn't let his daughter go to school because she didn't understand
anything. It is very sad to see how these children have no chance or help to
access to schooling

Uno de los enfermos
mas complicados que hemos visto estos días
tenia una infección muy severa, mucha temperatura y la presión muy baja.
En Europa hubiera sido ingresado rápidamente y se hubieran solucionado su problema.
Con una gran tristeza
le tuve que mandar a casa con unas pastillas. Aquella noche, me fuía la cama
muy preocupado y estuve orando por esa persona. Yo sabía que empeoraría, pero
al día siguiente el paciente volvió a mi consulta y con gran sorpresa noté que
había mejorado muchísimo, casi hasta la normalidad, en el mejor de los casos,
yo nunca me hubiera esperado esto con este paciente. Ya sea por las pastillas,
la oración o por la combinación de ambas cosas, fue maravilloso ver su
recperación
Hemos visto muchos
casos de niños con malaria que podrían ser tratados de manera simple, pero aquí es mu difícil por falta de
tratamiento. Las expectativas de los pacientes siempre son muy altas pero
nosotros no podemos hacer milagros, aunque muchos de nosotros creemos que si
hay un Dos que puede hacer milagros y estas situaciones te dan oportunidad de
orar por las pacientes enfermos ya que muchos casos la única opción posible es
orar por ellos, aunque estoy absolutamente seguro que todas las personas que
pasan por las diferentes consultas se han beneficiado con el tratamiento,
medicinas, etc.
Dr. Daniel Sedgewick (General Medicine)
One of
the sick most complicated we have seen these days had a very severe infection,
high temperature and very low pressure. In Europe it would have been quickly
admitted to the hospital and his problem would be solved .
With
great sadness I had to send him home with some pills. That night, i went to bed
very worried and I prayed for that person. I knew that it would worsen, but the
next day the patient returned to my inquiry and with great surprise I noticed
that it had improved a lot, almost to normal, in the best of cases, I never I
had expected this with this patient. Either by the pills, the prayer or by a
combination of both things, it was wonderful see his recuperation.
We have
seen many cases of children with malaria that could be treated easily, but here
it's very difficult because the lack of treatment. Patients expectations are
always very high but we cannot do miracles, although many of us believe that if
that there is a God that can do miracles and these situations give you the
opportunity to pray for the ill patients because in many cases the only
possible option is pray for them, even though I'm absolutely sure that all the
people who pass through the various consultations have been benefited from treatment,
medicines, etc.

En nuestra primera
reunión en Barcelona yo expresé que venia a Burkina con temor a lo que me podría
encontrar, ahora mi temor ha cambiado, ahora el temor que tengo es que me cuesta entender lo que me dicen los
niños, aunque el Philip y yo estamos intentando hacer un diccionario Moore para
entender algo y comunicarnos mejor con los niños.
Si me tuviera que
quedar con una imagen, sería cuando hicimos el circuito de pruebas (ginkama). Todos
vimos a los niños que una vez habían completado el circuito automáticamente volvían a ponerse en la cola
para volver a participar. Y más tarde ellos querían ocupar nuestro lugar para
ayudarnos. La imagen era la de un niño recogiendo los sacos de saltar y
devolviéndolos al principio de la prueba con una sonrisa amplia en su boca,
eran felices solo con eso.

At our
first meeting in Barcelona I expressed that I was going to Burkina with fear of
what I might find, now my fear has changed, now the fear I have is that it
costs me understand what tell me children, although Philip and I are trying to
do a Moore dictionary to understand something and communicate better with the
children.
If I had
to choose an image, it would be when we made the circuit of tests (ginkama). We
all saw the children that once they had completed the circuit automatically
returned to the tail to participate again. And later they wanted to occupy our
place to help us. The image was that of a child picking up the jumping bags and
returning them to the beginning of the test with a smile wide on her mouth,
they were happy just with that.

Es impresionante ver
que los niños siempre están felices, y en cuanto nos ven se ponen a gritar
Nasara! Nasara!, y te saludan muy efusivos. Hoy hemos estado pintando el
orfanato donde viven. Ellos nos han
ayudado mucho, ver su felicidad, para ellos eres su modelo, se lavan las manos
como nosotros, nos imitan en todo y nosotros lo hacemos con cosas básicas para
enseñarles.

It is impressive to see how children always
are happy, and how they shout Nasara! Nasara! when they see us comming, and how
they greet us very effusive. Today we have been painting the orphanage where
they live. They have helped us a lot, see their happiness, for them we are
their model, they wash their hands like us, they imitate all we do and we do it
with basic things to teach them.

Es mi primera vez
en África, he trabajado en Francia en
animación infantil y la verdad es que es absolutamente diferente aquí. Aquí todo lo que proponemos lo aceptan con
una amplia sonrisa y esto nos hace muy felices y nos facilita mucho las cosas.
Hoy hemos pintado el orfanato y me ha impresionado ver el lugar donde viven los
niños. Dos grandes habitaciones muy sucias y malolientes con todas sus cosas
por el suelo, con apenas 4 colchones absolutamente deteriorados. Aquí los niños
están muy animados y se involucran muy fácilmente , nada que ver con Europa
donde siempre se están quejando, es obvio que la mentalidad es muy distinta. Ha
sido un poco difícil entenderse con los miembros del equipo por el idioma pero
finalmente hemos superado esta barrera.

This is
my first time in Africa, I have worked in children's entertainment in France
and the truth is that it is quite different here. Here they accept everything
what we propose them to do with a wide smile and this makes us very happy and
facilitates us much things. Today we have painted the orphanage and it has
impressed me to see the place where the children live. Two large rooms very
dirty and smelly with all their things on the ground, with barely 4 absolutely
damaged mattresses. Here children are very lively and involve very easily,
nothing to do with Europe where are always complaining, it is obvious that the
mentality is very different. It has been a little difficult to comunicate with
the members of the team because of the language but we have finally overcome
this barrier.

Me impacta la manera
como conectan contigo sin que tu tengas
que hacer prácticamente nada. Es como si estuviéramos en una televisión,
podemos tocarlos y que nos toquen. Es como si en todo momento hubiera una pantalla
en medio que separa los dos mundos, ellos siempre quieren estar contigo se
empujan, solo para estar más cerca de ti, lo que haces tu es como si viniera un
profeta de la antigüedad y dijera, “lo que yo hago es lo que tenéis que hacer”
y aunque no sea tu intención… lo hacen.
Me pongo triste,
cuando los ves salir de la clínica, sobre todos los niños del orfanato, porque
los conoces de verlos todos los días. Alguna vez hemos hablado de ellos con los
médicos y nos dicen que en algunos casos
sus patologías no tienen solución. Es como si una persona a la que tu conoces
de toda la vida, va a desaparecer dentro de muy poco tiempo, es bastante
frustrante.

It Impacts me the way as the children connect
with us without that we have to do practically nothing. It is as if we were on
a television, we can touch them and they touch us. It is as if there were a
screen in the middle that separates two worlds at all times, they always want
to be with you, they push only to be closer to you, what we do is for them as
if a prophet of ancient times come and say, "what I do is what you have to
do" and although it's not our intention... they do so.
It saddens me when I see them leaving the
clinic, about all the children from the orphanage, because I know them from
seeing them every day. Sometimes we have discussed from them with the doctors
and they tell us that in some cases their pathologies have no solution. It is
as if a person that you know lifelong, will disappear within very little time,
it is quite frustrating.
